Few will dispute that Mike Hailwood was the greatest racing motorcyclist
the world has ever seen.
Mike the Bike™ was the winner of 3 British Championships in 1958
at the age of 18 and all four titles 125cc, 250cc, 350cc and 500cc
at the age of 19. He was the youngest rider to win a World Championship
Grand Prix, the first to win 3 Isle of Man races in one week,
the youngest ever 250cc World Champion and the youngest to win
the 500cc World title.
In his career he won 76 Grand Prix and 9 World titles. After
a retirement of 7 years, Mike came back at the age of 38 to win
another TT on a Ducati and the following year came back and won
again this time on a Suzuki breaking the race and lap records.
Mike was awarded the MBE in 1968 for services to motorsport.
Mike was tragically killed near Birmingham, along with his daughter
Michelle, on the 23rd March 1981 in a car accident.
